Another of the group of new species identified in recent years from China, Hunan Province, in 1994. A vigorous tough evergreen medium sized species ideal for the woodland garden; and will tolerate deep shade, but with less of a flowering display.  Dark spiny glossy green leaves.  Bicolor flowers with white inner sepals and reddish purple petals.

Introduced from China by Mikinori Ogisu.  This is an evergreen with new growth in early spring followed by bright yellow flowers.  Leaves elongated and prickly.  Flowers are borne in long racemes over a long flowering period from April to early August.  Height to 45cm.
