Ferns
Himalayan Maidenhair – Hardy deciduous fern, almost evergreen in mild areas, forming a mat of fronds up to 25cm. Moist, cool sites with plenty of shade.
Japanese Tassle Fern Hardy semi-evergreen fern with pale-green fronds, with yellow bristles, growing up to 60cm. Fronds darken with age. Moist well-drained soil in semi-shade.
Soft Shield Fern Compact evergreen fern growing to 60cm. Triangular fronds with overlapping pinnae. Moist, but well drained soil in partial shade, but will grow in full sun once established.
Broad Buckler Fern Hardy semi-evergreen with toothed and crispy fronds growing in bushy clumps to 60cm tall. Easy in good garden soils in full or partial shade.
Northern Maidenhair – Delicate, 20-40cm fronds with black stems, spread out into a fan-like circle. Hardy and easy to grow in moist, cool free draining environments in reasonable shade. Deciduous.

Japanese Painted Fern Hardy herbaceous fern with often reddish green fronds with a strong silvery sheen. Grow in free-draining moist soil in semi to full shade. Makes good ground cover.
Soft Needle Fern Relatively recent introduction. Hardy fern with pale green fronds growing to 90cm. Moist soil in shade or semi-shade.
