Very attractive Japanese fern with mahogany ribbed, deep olive green fronds growing up to 45 cm. Moist free-draining soil in moderate to deep shade. Deciduous and hardy. Makes a very good specimen plant and does well in a pot.

Large deciduous edible fern with a thick rhizome that occasionally can form a small trunk. Tall arching graceful fronds appear in spring. The emerging croziers are collected for food in Japan. Fronds can reach 90cm. Also used as a houseplant through spring and summer for cleaning the air.
