Our ‘starter packs’ have proved to be popular in previous years. We offer four different named ferns, chosen by us, for £20.00 including post and packaging. All of our ferns are suited to moist conditions in shade or semi-shade. All are hardy in the UK, although some will appreciate a more sheltered position. We will try to provide a good range of ferns. No more than 3 starter collections per order (ie 12 different named ferns), please.
Japanese Painted Fern Hardy herbaceous fern with deep purple-red painted fronds. The depth of the colour and frond patterning increases with age. Grow in free-draining moist soil in semi to full shade. Makes good ground cover, and equally good as a specimen planting.
Alpine Wood Fern Hardy semi-evergreen fern, with tufts of erect, narrow fronds up to 150cm. Frond ribs covered in yellow hairs when young, which turn black with age, giving this fern its distinctive look. Good quality moist garden soil in shade and away from heat in summer.
Siebold’s Wood Fern – Slow spreading in dappled woodland shade, with blue shaded, leathery fingered fronds up to 80 cm. Drought tolerant when it is established and enjoys a warmer site. New fronds appear through the season. Originates in China and Japan.
